HURRICANE MELISSA: A CALL FOR PRAYER AND SUPPORT
The Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) stands in deep concern and solidarity with our brothers and sisters across the region who have been affected by Hurricane Melissa.
This catastrophic Category 5 storm has left widespread devastation in Jamaica, particularly in St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, St. James, Hanover, and Trelawny, with many homes and church buildings destroyed. Black River has been described as “Ground Zero.” Parts of Haiti have also suffered severe flooding, especially in Petit-Goâve, Les Cayes, and Jérémie, where lives have been lost and communities displaced.
We continue to receive reports as access improves, and our Disaster Mitigation Committees are assessing the needs on the ground. Immediate relief efforts will focus on providing food, clean water, hygiene kits, and temporary shelters. Long-term recovery will include mental health support, rebuilding of homes and chapels, and addressing food insecurity caused by the destruction of agricultural livelihoods.
We urge all members and friends of the MCCA to pray for the victims and responders and to offer support in any way possible as we work together to bring comfort and restoration to those affected.
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
The MCCA was legally established in 1967 by a Deed of Church Order as an autonomous body of Christian believers. Its headquarters is located in Antigua, where Methodism first began in the Caribbean.
There are 8 districts within the Conference.
